Canadian content production

Exhibit 2-4 Volume of Canadian content production, by region*, 2024/25

Source:
Estimates based on data collected from CAVCO.

Note:
Some totals may not sum due to rounding. Includes an estimate of CRTC-certified television production; see Notes on methodology for more information. Excludes ‘online-first’ audiovisual production; see Box 1 for definitions and statistics.
Statistics published by provincial funding agencies may differ from those in Profile 2025. Due to the low number of projects (particularly theatrical feature film projects) in certain provinces and territories, production volume statistics are grouped by region to avoid disclosure of budgets for individual projects. Please see Notes on methodology for additional information.
Historical figures for certain provinces/territories have been revised due to the re-coding of some productions to different fiscal years (in which principal photography started) and/or to different provinces/territories.
* Based on province or territory where lead producer is based.
** Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut and Northwest Territories.
*** Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

Production data in Profile is based on the province or territory where the lead producer is located. To provide another perspective, CAVCO has also provided data based on the location where the project was filmed. Using this methodology, the entire costs of a film or television project has been assigned to the province or territory with the highest number of filming days. Topline data by region of filming is provided in Exhibit 2-6b below. Of note, it is only provided in this section, and not elsewhere in the report.

When looking by region of lead producer, the 2.2% overall decrease in the volume of Canadian content production in 2024/25 was driven by significant decreases in British Columbia (down $159 million) and the Prairie Provinces and Territories (down $212 million). This was partially offset by increases in Ontario (up $234 million), Quebec (up $42 million) and Atlantic Canada (up $14 million).

However, production data based on the region of filming provide additional context, specifically in relation to the fluctuations in production volume noted above. The overall increases of Canadian content production in Ontario ($75 million) and Quebec ($13 million) are much lower, offset by decreases in volume in British Columbia and the Prairie Provinces and Territories.
